Quick Vegetarian Recipe: Homemade Pita Chips Do you have a big, lonely vat of hummus that needs dipping implements? Does that lame-o salad need a little extra zing to impress your lettuce-hating parents? Solution: homemade pita chips!  They’re easy, healthy, taste great, and can be made to suit any meal. What you’ll need: Hardware Large frying pan Large kitchen knife Pair of tongs Plate and a paper towel Software Enough canola, olive, or sunflower oil to coat the bottom 1/2 of said frying pan (probably about 1/2 to a full cup) Tortillas (fresh from the store are best), white, wheat, red, or blue Spices appropriate to your particular meal What you’ll do: Heat the oil on medium — around the 5 to 6 setting.  You want it hot enough so...

Porn & Vegetarianism Don’t Mix

Why become a vegetarian?  Apparently, PETA is adding a new “XXX” reason into the mix. According to today’s Reuters article, the extremist animal rights group PETA (People for the Ethical Treatment of Animals) is launching a new XXX-rated porn site.  According to the article, the site will begin with normal hardcore videos, but as visitors delve deeper (no pun intended) into the site and its content, they’ll be greeted by images and video of animals being tortured and slaughtered in an attempt to get the anti-factory farming message across. Yeah…I keep waiting for the punchline too. If this hadn’t come from what appears to be a reputable news source, I would have sloughed it off as just another goofy, Snopes-level Internet...

What Can Vegetarians Eat? More Like, What’s the One Thing We Can’t Eat…

What can vegetarians eat? A lot of people worry about this.  The thing is, it’s not really that hard to go vegetarian.  You’re really only cutting out one thing from your diet.  Granted, that one thing comprises the bulk of many people’s diets. Especially if you’re in Texas. But the fact is that replacing meat in your diet isn’t hard.  It takes a little bit of planning, and maybe a bit of an open mind as well.  But don’t think you’re going to have to plan out every single meal if you don’t want to. It’s 3:25 pm on Thursday.  Let’s look at what I’ve eaten in the last 24 hours. For lunch yesterday, my girlfriend and I had awesome Indian food from a local upscale fast-food place called Tarka....

If you’re eating a balanced diet, getting vegetarian sources of protein isn’t hard.  Most elements of a plant-based diet have various building blocks of protein, and those amount to a healthy protein intake overall. But every now and then, there’s nothing wrong with hitting the protein…hard. So what follows are some ideas for a quick, high-protein boost to get you feeling great and jumping hurdles and running marathons, and well, whatever else you can do with all that energy.  Maybe you can just clean your house and pick up the kids without feeling like crap. Vegetarian vs Vegan

There’s a long-standing debate in the meatless community about being vegetarian vs vegan.  What’s the right answer? Before we answer the vegetarian vs vegan question, let’s make sure we all know the difference. A vegetarian is someone who does not eat any meat.  This includes not consuming any beef, poultry, lamb, fish, or anything else that had a heart and a face and was alive.  A vegetarian DOES generally eat dairy, eggs, honey, and other products that are PRODUCED by animals, but that animal did not have to sacrifice its life in order to provide a person with food. By the way, some people say, “I’m vegetarian, but I eat fish.”  That’s not a vegetarian — that’s a pescetarian, and that’s the subject...

Become A Vegetarian…But Leave the Red Paint at Home

To become a vegetarian is one thing.  But some people take it beyond just what goes in their mouths. It’s easy to become angry when you think about what goes on in the food industry.  First you have factory farms.  They’re mutilating, mistreating, hurting, and slaughtering millions and millions of animals every day. Next, you have restaurants and manufacturers, who go to great lengths to package meat as “food,” not dead animals.  If you ever see pictures of animals on commercials for steak or chicken, they’re mostly in cartoon or other “cute” forms. And so forth. But wait…I’m trying to make a different point here.  Let’s back up a second.  Rewind. Note that in talking about the animal industry, I...
